"If the German people had followed the politics in the newspapers (whatever the signature) before the Second World War, the Second World War would not have taken place"
— so claimed my old history teacher in our final year of secondary school. That was in 1951, relatively shortly after the war, and so I can imagine someone putting forward such a bold proposition, one that cannot really be proven. Sixty years later, I still hold the view that this claim cannot be proven, and therefore can never be a self-evident truth. For me, however, it is — and so I read the newspaper, and I ask everyone to do the same.
